With an educational background in commerce and a vital interest in math education, Mr. Smetko presents math concepts and problem solving opportunities to middle school students with an emphasis on understanding, application, and advancement. Operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents and integers are correlated with the solving of problems. Students proceed through general math, pre-algebra, algebra and geometry.
KATHLEEN GIENKO
B.A. History Education & Geography
MA Urban Planning & Geography
Included at each level are activities to promote whole class, small group and individual applications of social studies concepts. Techniques for studying non fiction materials are stressed as well as map and chart reading skills. Writing and speaking skills are reinforced using student essays, presentations and discussions. Multi media sources are used for reference and review such as on- line research, educational CD's, CD ROMs and DVD's, encyclopedias, atlases, newspapers and history games.
HELMUT MAYER

The study of English at the middle school level builds on the skills introduced in the earlier grades and refines those skills. Conducting research, writing term papers, delivering speeches, identifying parts of speech and their effective use in written communication, analyzing sentence structure, creating poetry/stories/various forms of written communication are a few of the applications of reading/writing/listening/speaking opportunities in the language arts classes taught by Mr. Mayer.
LOIS BILICKI
B.A. Elementary Education
To produce effective learning of general science and life/earth/physical science
in the middle school, Miss Bilicki plans projects, activities, demonstrations, experiments, workshop opportunities at various museums, and field trip experiences to create a solid foundation of scientific knowledge and understanding. Building on earlier science studies, the middle school students advance in science during four years of a sequential curriculum.
